The is ranked in the top 10 among doctoral-granting universities for the percentage of undergraduate students who study abroad, according to the Institute of International Education (IIE).

This year, the IIE—whose mission is to expand international education—has ranked DU 9th in the country, with more than 71% of 2023-2024 graduates having studied abroad. Study abroad is a signature experience at DU, one that allows students to grow across all four dimensions of the 4D Experience: deepen intellect, develop well-being, discover character, and design careers and lives of purpose.

“DU’s ranking in the top 10 is a testament to the strong institutional foundation over the last few decades, with a focus on cultivating globally competent graduates, strengthening international partnerships, and offering enriching, differentiating experiences for our students,” says Uttiyo Raychaudhuri, vice provost for internationalization.

DU is committed to making experiential education not only essential but also accessible. The supports DU students throughout the journey, through advising, financial planning, and a range of additional resources.

Thanks to DU Partner Programs with 100 study abroad programs and universities across the world, paying for a study abroad experience is the same as paying to study on campus. Students pay tuition to DU, and then DU pays that tuition to the study abroad program. This means all financial aid, including academic scholarships, state aid, need-based aid, and outside assistance, still applies. But DU goes a step further with the initiative, a merit-based scholarship that covers the cost of roundtrip airfare and visa application fees.

For many students, the question isn’t whether they’ll have the opportunity to study abroad, it’s where they’ll go. This academic year, 846 DU students have committed to going abroad, with most of them already at their destinations for the fall quarter. Students are traveling to many different countries, the most popular among them being Spain (22%), Italy (21%), the United Kingdom (9.5%), the Czech Republic (6%), and France (4%).

“DU study abroad students expand their horizons, deepen cultural understanding, and build lifelong skills and confidence that empowers them to grow academically, personally, and professionally in ways no classroom at home can fully replicate,” Raychaudhuri says.
