Spyware and Malware

What is CrowdStrike?

CrowdStrike is an Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) software that protects computers at DU from various malicious programs and software such as malware, ransomware, spyware, and computer viruses.

CrowdStrike works by monitoring activity on the computer and blocking malicious activity. Because it does not rely on “virus definitions” like traditional anti-viruses, it provides more protection against emerging threats.

CrowdStrike works by installing a lightweight agent called the Falcon sensor on the computer, which communicates with our cloud environment.

Who can install CrowdStrike on their computer?

CrowdStrike is already installed on all University-owned computers (Windows, Mac OS, and most Linux systems). The version that is installed on University owned computers cannot be uninstalled or turned off.

پstudents, faculty, and staff can install the personal version onone (1)personal computer. Falcon sensor installs for personal computers running Windows or Mac OS are available in My4D under PC Applications or Mac Applications. If you would like to request an installer for a personal computer running a Linux operating system, please open a and be sure to include the exact operating system and version your computer is running. I’m having trouble installing CrowdStrike Falcon sensor on my computer – how can I get help?

The two most common reasons CrowdStrike doesn’t install properly are

1. Your operating system is not supported. CrowdStrike only works on operating systems that are supported and receive updates from the manufacturer (Windows/Apple). If your computer is running an old version of the operating system, or a beta version of a new operating system, the Falcon sensor may not install. Please open a ticket with the IT Help Center to determine if your computer needs to be updated.

2. The Falcon sensor does not have the correct permissions to run on your computer.Particularly on Mac OS, the sensor needs to be given specific permissions to install and run properly. On a Mac, it requires Full Disk Access and Network Filtering Access. On a Windows computer, it must be installed by a user that has admin rights on the computer.
